The BRICS accounted for 2/3 to the 4% increase in global electricity consumption.
In 2024, global electricity consumption accelerated (+4%, compared to the 2.7%/year average over 2010-2019 and in 2023).
Two thirds of the increase is related to the BRICS (+6%), which accounted for 46% of the global electricity consumption in 2024. China was the largest contributor to the rise, with +7%, reaching 33% of the global electricity consumption, in a context of steady economic growth, high demand from industry and data centers, higher cooling needs and rising EV charging. Strong economic growth and high cooling demand also raised electricity consumption in India (+4%, slower than in 2023 and over 2010-2019) and in Brazil (+6%). It also increased in Russia (+2% over higher demand from industry and buildings due to more extreme weather), and South Africa (+3%, over higher power generation).
Electricity consumption also grew at a very fast pace in ASEAN countries (+6%, including +9% in Vietnam and +6% in Indonesia, in the Middle East (+5%, especially in Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia), in Türkiye (+5%), and in Africa (+4%, including +6% in Egypt).
It rose moderately in OECD countries. In the USA, the dynamic demand from industry, data centers, EV charging and building cooling raised the electricity consumption by 2% to a record high. Electricity consumption also increased by around 2% in Canada, Mexico and Australia. The growth was slower in the EU (+1%). Electricity consumption stagnated in Japan and South Korea.
