Global gas production was spurred by North America and the Middle East.
Global gas production increased by 1.3% in 2025, slowing down after a 1.8% hike in 2024, with most of the additional production coming from North America, the Middle East and China.
In the USA, the largest gas producer with 25% in 2025, gas production grew by 4%, spurred by a steady domestic demand, rising LNG exports, new pipeline capacity and higher Henry Hub prices; gas production also grew by 3% in Canada over higher domestic demand and exports. In addition, it increased by 3% in the Middle East with noticeable growth in Qatar and Saudi Arabia), and in China (+6%, as in 2024, to meet rising domestic gas demand).
This dynamic growth was partly counterbalanced by a 3% decrease in gas production in Russia (after a 7% rise in 2024), due to declining domestic demand and exports; since starting the war in Ukraine in 2022, Russia has lost its export route to Europe via Ukraine and has been unable to divert all its gas exports to Asia.
In Asia, gas production dipped in Australia (-2%) and India (-4%) and remained stable in Malaysia and Indonesia. It declined in Africa (-2%), over a 14% fall in Egypt partly offset by a 5% hike in Nigeria and a stable production in Algeria, in Europe (-2%, with faster declines in Norway and the UK) and in Latin America (-1%). Gas production grew by 2% in Argentina (ramp up of Vaca Muerta field) and surged by 16% in Brazil (new production wells and gas pipelines and rising domestic demand), but it fell by 9% in Mexico over lower consumption.
Global growth returns to pre-crisis patterns—but emissions are not decreasing fast enough for climate goals. As renewables surge and electricity demand accelerates, fossil fuels remain dominant. Discover the key trends reshaping energy and decarbonisation across the G20 in 2025.
