WORLD ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION Electricity consumption increased by 6.4% in 2010, driven by soaring demand in China. Chinese electricity needs surged by 15% and represented more than 40% of the overall increase in consumption.
OECD countries, which represent half of electricity consumption, contributed one-third of world growth. The United States remained the world’s largest electricity consumer (only 8% above the China, compared with +40% in 2007) and posted a strong increase in consumption in 2010 (4.2%), coming back to pre-crisis consumption levels. South Korea had dynamic growth (+10%), whereas Japan had low growth (1.7%) and electricity consumption decreased in Australia and Canada.
