Solid fuel consumption posted a high growth rate among fossil fuels in 2010 (5.3%), driven by the dynamism in Chinese demand (45% of the world increase with +5.3% of growth), in particular for electricity generation.
OECD countries had a strong increase compared to the trend before the crisis. Consumption of coal in the United States rose sharply, by 5.5%. In Japan, coal demand surged by 14% after the major scale-down of its consumption due to the economic downturn in 2009. In Europe, coal consumption grew by 3.7%, driven by a significant increase in Germany (7.7%).
Among emerging countries, Indian coal consumption rose at a slower pace than in 2009 (4.7% vs. 6.9% in 2009), but accounted for 8% of the world-wide increase, whereas coal consumption in Russia shot up 7.3%. Brazilian consumption returned to its pre-crisis levels thanks to a 21% increase in coal consumption in 2010.
