WORLD COAL AND LIGNITE PRODUCTION IN 2010 In 2010, growth in coal production remained robust at 5.2%.
China, the world’s largest coal producer by far, with 45% of overall production, substantially increased output (8.9%) mainly to supply its own needs.
Coal and lignite production grew to a lesser extent in the other main producing countries: Output increased by 3% in 2010 in India – more slowly than the previous year (8% in 2009), while it increased 2.7% in Australia after stagnation in 2009.
The United States, the second coal producer world-wide with 15% of supply, saw production decline slightly (-0.3%).
Conversely, in Indonesia, coal production continued to grow rapidly by 7.3% (10% in 2009).
In Russia, production rose rapidly, by 5.4%, but did not recover to its pre-crisis level.
In European coal producing countries, output experienced decreases ranging from 0.9% in Germany to 2.2% in Poland.
OECD represented less than 30% of the world’s coal production.
