Due to the significant diffusion of hydroelectricity, Latin America posted the largest share of renewables in electricity production among world regions in 2010 (57%).
The share of renewables increased by 1.5 percentage points in Europe during the year and represents 25% of overall electricity production, mainly due to the development of wind capacities.
Renewables in power production also grew in Pacific (2 percentage points) and, to a lesser extent, in Asia and the Middle East, which posted the lowest share among world regions (1.5%). In China, the share of renewables in electricity production increased by 1 percentage point, up to 17%, driven by a 60% surge in electricity production from wind energy.
Conversely, the share of renewables in electricity production declined slightly in North America (mainly due to lower hydroelectricity production in Canada) and fell 3 percentage points in Russia.
