REGIONAL POWER IMPORTS AND EXPORTS IN 2010

In 2010, the European Union was a net exporter of electricity – for the first time since 2004 – with exports of electricity increasing by 8% and imports falling.

The United States was able to reduce its net importer position through a 16% decrease in power imports. As a result, Canada experienced a decline in its net exporter position due to lowered exports of electricity to the United States.
Germany, the largest exporter of electricity with 10% of the overall exports, reinforced its position as a net exporter by 20% during the year.
Latin America noted deterioration in its position as a net importer, chiefly due to a substantial decrease in Brazilian imports of electricity.
