COAL AND LIGNITE IMPORTS AND EXPORTS IN 2010 China, which is by far the world’s largest coal producer, is also the second largest coal importer after the United States and drives all trends on the coal supply chain.
The country, which was a net importer until 2008, has become a net exporter since then due to the explosion of its needs and, in 2010, its net importing position deteriorated by 40%.
OECD lessened its dependency on coal imports by 12%. The trade surplus in the United States increased by 70% due to a 38% rise in coal exports; in Australia it rose by 9.5% and in Russia by 20%, whereas European net imports decreased by 4.5%. Japan faced a deterioration of its net importer position in 2010 since imports rose sharply by 14% after the substantial scale-down noted in 2009. The trade deficit in coal also worsened by 14% in South Korea. In South Africa, the trade surplus grew by 4.5% during the year.
