Glossary

The trade balance is the difference between exports and imports. The balance of a net exporter appears as a negative value (-). The balance of geographic and geopolitical zones is simply the sum of the trade balance of all the countries.

Natural gas is mainly made of methane (CH4). It is marketed after separation of the liquid fractions. The calorific power of natural gas varies according to its methane concentration. The standard coefficient used by ENERDATA is: 0.82 toe/m3, for important countries national coefficients are used.

Natural gas balance of trade

Europe remained the world's largest gas importer

, accounting for half of total imports. The European Union's position of net importer

increased by 5.3% since gas exports

reduced faster than imports.

CIS remained the world's largest gas exporter (25% of the total)

and deepened its position by 22% in 2009. North America confirmed its position of net exporter despite it reduced during the year (-5%).

Chinese gas exports were reduced by 66%

and resulted in a severe deterioration in the country's gas balance of trade in 2009. The Middle East continued to expand its gas exports (by 10% in 2009). A substantial cut in gas exports led to a deterioration of the Africa's balance of trade (-10%).
